The Greens became the first party in Finland to leave messaging platform X
The Greens have decided to cease communication on the messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter, along with the party’s chairperson Sofia Virta. This is how she justifies the decision.
The Greens are reportedly the first Finnish political party to stop communication on X. Party chairperson Sofia Virta justifies the decision by pointing to the platform’s problematic nature, particularly its owner Elon Musk’s direct support for far-right movements.
"The decision wasn’t simple but, in my opinion, it was the right one. I do not want, and we do not want, to support in any way the actions of Elon Musk, who acquired ownership of X. The way he has harnessed the platform primarily to advance his own political agenda is repugnant. Musk openly supports far-right movements and politicians and uses the platform to promote such an agenda. In this situation, we no longer wish to support X through our actions," Virta states.
According to Virta, the party also feels that societal discussion on X is no longer relevant or worthwhile due to the platform's widespread systematic hate speech, conspiracy theories, and disinformation. Among the Greens’ members of parliament, Atte Harjanne was the first to leave the platform, and discussions about closing the party’s account have been ongoing since autumn.
"Elon Musk and X are deliberately working to increase division and polarization in society. The Greens are happy to engage in even critical societal discussions, but not when the sole purpose is to fuel hatred, increase discrimination, and spread false information," Virta emphasizes.
